The theatrical greatness of Shakespeare meets the virtuosity and stage wizardry of Crystal Pite as she and her company return to OtB, their Seattle home-away-from-home. The Tempest Replica marries theater and dance in a game of revenge and forgiveness, reality and imagination, all based on motifs from The Tempest. The familiarity of Shakespeare’s magical island serves as a metaphor for isolation, captivity and desire as the company’s incomparable performers and their “replicas” bring to life a dark, humorous and breathtaking spin on this classic story. As with her past work Dark Matters, Pite infuses the stage with skilled movement, original music, text, and rich visual design.
In the six years since Crystal Pite first appeared at OtB, she and Kidd Pivot have become some of the most in-demand dance artists in the world. Pite’s choreographic skills, honed from years dancing under William Forsythe, have in that time developed to include a strong theatrical sensibility, sharp technical exactitude and a keen sense of wit and invention. Pite and her company have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2011 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, and she has served in several prestigious positions, including Associate Choreographer at the Nederlands Dans Theater and the Artist in Residence at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm (Frankfurt). This will be Kidd Pivot’s fourth visit to OtB.
