It’s 1965 and everything is just about to happen. Pop, subculture, superstars, feminism, drugs, bright lights, and sex are about to rock the world like never before. And Andy Warhol was about to help usher it all in. Gob Squad riffs on the work of this art celebrity and cultural rabble-rouser while looking back at the underground cinemas of NYC. As the company reconstructs the iconic films Kitchen, Kiss, Sleep and Screen Test in real time they set forth on a simultaneously large-scale and intimate quest for the original, the authentic, the here and now, and the hidden depths beneath the shiny surfaces of modern life.
Gob Squad is an ingenious and inventive group of UK and German artists who make performances and videos which search for beauty in the everyday, and look for words of wisdom from passing strangers. Their performances explore the nexus where theater meets art, media and real life. Everyday life and magic, banality and utopia, reality and entertainment are all set on a collision course while audiences are asked to step beyond their traditional role as passive spectators. The company was founded in Nottingham in 1994 and currently works primarily out of Berlin. Their performances have toured to all continents apart from Antarctica. Gob Squad was last seen at OtB in 2001.
