The career of visual artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was both joyful and troubled, peppered with complex depictions of child’s play, violence and femininity. Her assemblages finished with rifle shots and her monumental “Nanas,” sculptures of voluptuous female figures in motion, serve as inspiration for the whipsmart choreographer Catherine Cabeen as she continues her exploration of visual artists via dance. With four dancers and an ambitious group of collaborators by her side, including Susie J Lee, Connie Yun, Kane Mathis and Julian Martlew, Cabeen celebrates and investigates the life and art of this lauded yet controversial woman.
Catherine Cabeen is a choreographer who has trained in Graham technique, performed with and assisted Bill T. Jones, and received an MFA in dance and gender studies. Her dynamic performances have been seen internationally in tours from Seattle and NYC to Lebanon and Tanzania. The company, founded in 2009, has been seen at OtB (Into the Void, The A.W.A.R.D. Show! and the NW New Works Festival) as well as at numerous Seattle festivals and venues.
Fire! was commissioned and supported through On the Boards’ Dance Production Program.
