time is passing... time is passing... Apr 16, 2011

I try not to categorize artwork by nationality, but there is something, well, particularly french about L'Effet de Serge. Whether intentional or accidental, I felt an intellectual alignment with French philosophers such as de Certeau who examined the daily. It a play that is charmingly uncomfortable, hilariously underplayed, and quite possibly making fun of itself even as it takes itself too seriously. Serge's armchair performances sent me home to pull Bachelard's Poetics of Space off my book shelf.

Wonderful Oddity Apr 16, 2011

The newest show at OTB's is titled L’Effet de Serge by Philippe Quesne, judging by the anecdote in the program, Seattle is very lucky to have had the opportunity to see the show dispute some tricky customs situations. The show is slow, strange and ultimately uneventful; in other words it's wonderful. My opinion of the show is entirely a paradox, elements I usually severely dislike about performance art become enjoyable through Philippe Quesne's direction.

The Drama of Nothing...and Everything! Apr 15, 2011

This apartment looks very much like Serge himself. A child/man's playground. A long room of blank white walls, empty space on one side and in the other a ping pong table littered with various half constructed models, small TV and VCR, colored wire, bags of chips, cans of silly string. Sliding glass doors cut into the wall reveal a lush green garden, that also has the odd effect of being within a terrarium.

On the Boards needs to raise over $5,000 to cover the costs of our unexpected struggle to obtain visas to bring Obie Award-winning French theater company Vivarium Studio to OtB.  As of this morning, we've raised $475 towards this goal. OtB board member Josef Vascovitz has generously offered a $1,000 matching gift challenge - $500 to match the first $500 donations we receive, and $500 more if we can raise the same amount from new, first-time donors.
