A lost sock, a blown-out birthday candle, a dog-eared novel, a broken cd, a heads-up penny: participants will link objects and stories together to make a performable map of A Day in the Life. Storytelling and movement exercises will guide exploration of each object, both individually and in small groups. Each participant will come away with the skills to further work the stories begun during the workshop.
Participants should bring two objects to the masterclass: one that has significance in their life (but not valuable) and one that is ordinary, but encountered on a near-daily basis. We will utilize all objects to tell stories through words and movement, cycling through multiple tales to find shared experiences and those we thought were common but turn out to be unique to the individual.
Gillian Jorgensen has been a teaching artist and creative drama specialist in Seattle for 17 years, working with students from preschool through high school in creative drama, writing and performance-based classes. She works regularly with SCT’s Drama School, Youth Theatre Northwest, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Book-it Repertory Theatre and ACT Theatre. As a playwright, she has adapted numerous works, including The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio, The Prince of the Pond, My Father's Dragon, Outside Over There, The Rainbow Goblins and Mouse Soup. Her original plays include And Also Fierce, No Way Out, The Visible Wood, and Little Mishmash. Upcoming projects include late night playwriting sessions intended to unearth the stories of seafaring pianists and curious grandmothers. Gillian holds a BS in Speech in Theatre from Northwestern University.
