SPECIAL EVENT | Christian Rizzo | Sophie Laly
Néo-FictionSep 14-Sep 15, 2012
FREE* Merrill Wright Mainstage Theater
Figures have a way of appearing and disappearing in Christian Rizzo’s performances. In Néo-Fiction he and filmmaker Sophie Laly investigate physical presence and its dispersion and disappearance amongst nature. The Pacific Northwest’s distinct sights—from the mountains to the water—serve as the main character in this performance of moving images and sound that juxtaposes the closed-off world of the theatrical space against the spaciousness of the outdoors. This world premiere installation will be created throughout the summer of 2012 in Seattle before premiering at OtB and touring to festivals abroad.
NEW: Néo-Fiction will feature music created and performed live by Seattle cellist Lori Goldston.
Christian Rizzo is a choreographer, visual artist, filmmaker, provocateur and a former fashion designer and punk rocker. His work has been seen widely throughout Europe, but rarely in the US with the exception of OtB and in NYC. Since his very first appearance here in 2006 he has increasingly worked in opera and installation, creating original stagings and exhibitions across France and Belgium.
Sophie Laly is a visual artist who makes video installations that question and dissect the notions of time and space as inspired by fields such as cinema, biology and physics. She worked as a projectionist in Paris before moving on to producing dance films for such legends as Deborah Hay, Boris Charmatz, Alain Buffard and many more. Since 2008 she has collaborated with Christian Rizzo on several projects.
Néo-Fiction was co-commissioned and supported through On the Boards’ Performance Production Program; FUSED: French-US exchange in Dance—a program of the NEFA / National Dance Project; and French Cultural Services.
