Class description: This class is geared towards performance creation for theater artists and dance artists interested in theatrical means. Who are we, when we say “I“ on stage? And of what use is this “I"? What could “I“ say or do? And who should be interested? What rules apply when we encounter one another on stage? This performance workshop deals with the artistic strategy of estrangement. Estrangement from the self, from everyday forms of speech and patterns of interaction. Estrangement as a means of experience, as a strange effect. In various exercises we will define the stage as a playing field with rules and tasks, which avoid everyday communication and instead set free unexpected perspectives. Based on these playing structures we will finally develop our own performances in small groups.
Sebastian Bark was born in 1972 in Redwood City, California. He studied theatre, music and cultural studies in Berlin and graduated from Humboldt Universität in 2001. He has been a permanent member of She She Pop since 1999. He lets the group dispose of his musical talent as sound designer and musician and in the past two years has also enhanced their appearances on stage by his magnetic male presence. Apart from his performance work he develops new concepts for the opera with young director Sven Holm.
Lisa Lucassen was born in Düsseldorf in 1969 and is a resident of Berlin today. She graduated from the Insitut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft in Gießen in 1995 and is one of the founding members of She She Pop. Her mouth with the legendary gap between the two front teeth became an early logo of the trade mark She She Pop. Her voice has enhanced the often deluded musical ambitions of the group.
She She Pop, the Berlin performance collective was founded in 1998 by graduates of Giessen Institute for Applied Theatre Studies. Members are Sebastian Bark, Johanna Freiburg, Fanni Halmburger, Lisa Lucassen, Mieke Matzke, Ilia Papatheodorou and Berit Stumpf. She She Pop develop their concepts and shows outside of the working and hierarchical structures of directed theatre. Their stage is a place in which acute decisions are made, methods of communication and social systems are tried out, grand gestures and social rituals are rehearsed or cast away. The productions regularly tour the theatres of the free scene and festivals in German speaking countries as well as internationally. Last Productions: Schubladen (Drawers), She She P is The Marquise of O, 7 Sisters, Testament (performed at Theatertreffen 2011).
