If you couldn't make it to the master class on Saturday, check out this YouTube video of Grupo de Rua member Bruno Duarte leading local dancers in a routine and then taking the stage solo. It's a short :78, but offers a fun peek into the afternoon.
'It's about the movement in relation to the space not just the movement for movement's sake.' That was what my friend Josh said after several conversations we had about Bruno Beltrao's H3. I liked the group better than the parts, I never let go of the sound of the sneakers on the marley and I desperately wanted them to go into a West Side Story snapping bit, but alas twas not to be.
Here are some of the reviews that have come in so far of Bruno Beltrao | Grupo de Rua at On the Boards:
"The show then explodes into a form of controlled kinetic madness ”¦and never really lets up." - Seattlest
"...the whirling scuttles, glancing catches in midair, twinings and near collisions feel like a new kind of a movement vocabulary in the makin

It's been quite a season at On the Boards this year, and this month has been jam packed so far with some awesome dance. Starting with Olivier Wevers' Whim W'him and the group's sold-out showings of 3 Seasons a couple weeks ago, this week brings dance from the other end of the dance spectrum (and also, other end of the world) with Brazilian chorographer Bruno Beltrão and Grupo de Rua's H3.

The world premiere of Best Before by the European company Rimini Protokoll is swiftly approach in Vancouver BC.
Dance Magazine covers the inaugural US tour of Grupo de Rua in their January issue:
Bruno Beltrão’s power-packed dance company, Grupo de Rua de Niterói, injects a new urban energy into Brazil and beyond. Like beautiful but wild graffiti, Beltrão’s special brand of hip hop is physical and aggressive, with strains of capoeira and lyrical movement. While GRN has performed in more than two dozen countries, the company comes to the U.S.

The Financial Times in the UK has just posted a review of 3Seasons:
In September, when Olivier Wevers announced the details of his new company Whim W’Him, he lit a fuse of excitement that has burned steadily in the Seattle dance community ever since. Why the furore?
Grupo de Rua is keeping busy in January with a 3 week, 7 stop tour.
There were many good things about last night's performance by Whim W'Him. It was gratifying to see On the Boards profiting from the first of three sold-out shows and to know that some PNB audience members were becoming better acquainted with what OtB has to offer. It was a pleasure to watch five of PNB's best dancers performing up close, something that ordinarily happens only at Friday previews.
Michael Upchurch on 3Seasons:
"I would say do anything you can — cash in your life insurance, pawn your children, whatever it takes — to grab a ticket to "3Seasons," the first full-length evening of work by Olivier Wevers and his new dance company, Whim W'Him."

A couple days agao Bruno Beltrao and Grupo de Rua made a one night stop at the Wexner. The Dispatch had the following to say about the performance:

For Seattle dance lovers, the members of Whim W'Him, a newly founded Seattle dance company, are a known quantity.
They're four stellar performers from Pacific Northwest Ballet (Chalnessa Eames, Kaori Nakamura, Jonathan Porretta, Lucien Postlewaite), another gifted quartet from Spectrum Dancer Theater (Ty Alexander Cheng, Hannah Lagerway, Kylie Lewallen, Vincent Lopez), and an eye-catching loner, Jim Kent, who has danced with Mark Haim ("Goldberg Variations") and Scott/Powell Performance.

Best part? It glows in the dark.
What were OtB artists up to during the holidays? "Awesome", for one, played at Winterfest and had an impromptu moment one evening that the Seattle PI declared to be British Idol-esque:
During a technical glitch in the performance, the lead singer who had noticed this Seattle Center local singing along in the audience motioned him to come forward. They talked for a few seconds and, Preacher John, as he is known began singing into "Awesome's" mic in this bluesy, gospel voice about the Lord and salvation.
